SHOULDERS FEELING WEAK?
As you watch football this fall, you may wonder: “How did that quarterback just make that throw?” While we marvel at their physical abilities, there’s a lot we can learn from these athletes to help prevent and treat our shoulder pain or dysfunction. Understanding how the shoulder moves is key to maintaining long-term joint health, whether you’re an athlete or someone who deals with everyday shoulder discomfort.

POOR POSTURE COULD BE THE CULPRIT
The shoulder is one of the most complex joints in the body, and a lot of that complexity comes from how the scapula, or shoulder blade, influences its movement. The scapula serves as a base for the shoulder and plays a pivotal role in the joint’s range of motion. When you round your shoulders with poor posture, it can disrupt the balance of the muscles surrounding the joint, leading to less efficient mechanics and an increased risk of injury.

Think about how often you slouch or hunch forward—over time, this can lead to imbalances that cause persistent discomfort or pain. Scapular retraction exercises, which focus on pulling your shoulder blades back and maintaining a straight posture, are a simple yet effective way to train your shoulders into their optimal position for function. So next time your mom reminds you to sit up straight, you might want to listen!
